Philosophy of Education

Education is the gateway to so many different opportunities and experiences in life. Teachers are a guide on a student’s journey through education. They lead the way through exploration of knowledge and concepts. Every teacher has their own unique philosophy of education. Education is always evolving, therefore teachers should always reevaluate their personal philosophy. Teachers have an impact on every student's classroom experience. This experience should positive and enriching.
School is a foundational and formational setting. Students can grow and expand their horizons in school. Education allows students to be exposed to new and different people, knowledge and experiences. Education serves many purposes in society. Schools are a place where students learn about themselves and other people. They learn the social norms of culture and explore new and interesting ideas. Every school should be a place where students can express themselves and share their unique ideas. Through education children grow and develop into well-rounded, critical thinkers.

Students are the main component of a classroom. Each student is a unique individual. It is important that teachers are aware of the individuality of each student. There is a whole person within each student and it is necessary to teach the whole student. Each student is a deep and dimensional person, who has needs and desires that need to be attended to. Students will respond positively when a teacher takes an interest in who they are. Students are eager to share their ideas and interests, it is important for teachers to listen to them. I believe that appealing to the emotions of students as well as their minds is an important idea. When the teacher is attentive and sensitive to students’ internal needs, the students will be more excited and motivated to learn the material. The material and subject matter are not the only things that teachers are teaching; it is important that every teacher realize that he/she is teaching the students how to be whole, well-rounded, productive people.
I do not believe that there are any “bad” students. Every child has potential, they just need support and encouragement to succeed. I believe that teachers need to be sensitive to the fact that students are all different. They have different backgrounds, interests and learning styles. As a teacher, I am aware of the differences among my students. I believe that teachers should encourage each student to do his/her personal best. Teachers should not compare students to one another, students should be compared to themselves and encouraged to do their own best work. I believe that teachers hold students responsible for their work and if they are doing poorly, the teacher needs to help the student examine why he/she is not doing well. Positive encouragement is necessary in my classroom.

All students deserve to experience success. I do not believe that failure should be an option. It is the job of a teacher to ensure that each student experiences some amount of success. Success comes in many different forms, from small behavioral accomplishments or larger academic victories, and is often reached by taking several different paths. The teacher is responsible for providing the road-map to success and any assistance needed along the way.
Enthusiasm is a quality that I believe every teacher should possess. I think every teacher should feel passionate and excited about teaching his/her subject matter. When the teacher expresses passion for their subject matter, it communicates a genuine sentiment to the students that they will favorably respond to. If the teacher truly loves teaching, students will sense that as well. Students are very intelligent and in touch with the emotions that surround them. It is important that the teacher be excited about the classroom if the teacher expects the students to be excited about the classroom.
I believe that being a teacher extends beyond the classroom. Teachers are there to serve as role-models and positive influences in the students’ lives. Teachers who only come to school and put in their eight hours a day are not, in my opinion, good teachers. Exceptional teachers are present in society and involved in the school. Their actions and behavior demonstrate hard work and dedication to serving as a guide to students inside and outside of the classroom.
