I am currently in my
second year of teaching at Northside Middle School in
Muncie, Indiana. Northside is a diverse school with
a total enrollment of 745 students. Of the 745 students:
70% are White, 20% are Black, 7% are Multiracial, and 2%
are Hispanic. Although Muncie is a mid-sized city, its
population is decreasing and the poverty level is
increasing. The free/reduced lunch program is essential
to many of the students: 47% pay for lunch, 43% receive
free lunch, and 10% pay a reduced price. Northside
students enjoy coming to school and can been seen in the
97% attendance rate.
Northside offers its students many opportunities to
excel through opportunities in the classroom and
after-school activities. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade
classes are divided up into two teams per grade. The 6th
grade teams are the Mountaineers and Aviators. The 7th
grade teams are the Novas and Challengers. The 8th grade
teams are the Discoverers and Seekers. The teams
participate in many activities throughout the year which
raise funds for charities and contribute to school
improvement. After school, students can participate in
seasonal sports and several clubs. |

| I teach 8th World
Language, 6th Keyboarding and 7th Essential Skills at
Northside. World Language and
Essential Skills are semester long classes, while
Keyboarding is a nine week course required of all sixth
graders. Each day is different and exciting at Northside. I am lucky to teach with wonderful students
and staff. |
