Basic Skills: Keyboarding

Course Description: This nine week course is designed to teach students the proper use of the keyboard through an introduction to typing. We will primarily be using Microsoft Word and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 16. Additionally, the understanding of the operation of the computer’s software and hardware are important components of this course. Students will be able to develop their typing skills through a variety of exercises including: dictation, timed typing drills, vocabulary terms, typing from script, and creating a variety of documents. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to type approximately 30-40 words per minute and possess the basic computer skills that will enable them to utilize the computer for other assignments and classes efficiently and effectively.

Objectives: ~ Proficiency on the alphabetic keyboard, numeric keypad and special marks of punctuation by using correct keystroke techniques.
~ Proficiency in shifting for capital letters, tabulation, returning and using the other parts of the computer effectively.
~ The ability to correct errors.
~ Format a variety of document styles.
~ To train students in the proper use of Microsoft Office software.
~ The ability to achieve the rate of 30-40 words per minute, with an accuracy of 85%.
Grading: Your grade will be based upon: technique/participation, twizzlers, class projects and assignments.
Grading Scale: 90% - 100 % - A 80% - 89% - B 70% - 79% - C 60% - 69% - D 59% and below - F

Please take a few minutes to read through both the Syllabus and the Classroom Procedures and discuss them with your child. We have also discussed the Syllabus and Classroom Procedures in class. After reading them, please sign this form acknowledging your reading and discussion with your child.
This signed form will count as the first participation grade for this class. It is due on ___________________. Students who bring back the signed letter by ________________ will receive 5 extra credit points.
