INTASC #_____8______

• Brief Description of Evidence:

This artifact is an assessment portfolio. This portfolio demonstrates the different types of assessments that are used in foreign language classrooms. There are also important links and resources that can assist foreign language teachers. The portfolio provides explanations of assessment strategies and examples the assessment type. I created this portfolio as a comprehensive overview of the basic things that I learned about assessment in foreign language classrooms.

• Analysis of What I Learned:

There are endless ways to assess students. The traditional pencil and paper tests are not always the best way to assess students. It is important to look at what is being assessed and design an assessment that is going to measure the desired skills. Assessment is an important component of any classroom and should be executed with care. I also learned that assessments can be formal or informal. An informal assessment is just as valid as a formal assessment. The most important thing that I learned was that the assessment style should match the teaching style.

• How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the INTASC Principle:

I understand that different types of assessments have strengths and weaknesses. It is important to design an assessment that is conscious of the limitations. As a teacher, I understand the different components of an assessment and the related issues. I understand the issues of validity, reliability, practicality and bias. I am committed to using assessment to measure the progress of the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Assessment is an important tool in any classroom.
