Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact
INTASC #_____8______
• Brief Description of Evidence:
This artifact is a rubric that I created for a short story writing activity. There are four categories in which the students will be assessed. This rubric is intended to be handed out with the assignment guidelines, so that students are completely aware on how their final assignment will be assessed. This rubric serves as a tool to provide feedback to the students concerning their progress and as a formal assessment tool.
• Analysis of What I Learned:
There are many different ways to assess students; however, I have learned that a rubric is highly effective for writing assignments. It allows the students to be aware of the assessment criteria. Rubrics allow teachers to make comments about the students work and suggest ways for improvement. I learned that assessments are most effective when students know what is expected of them and can also receive feedback as to how well they did.
• How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the INTASC Principle:
The teacher creates an assessment tool that allows the students to see what the assessment criteria will be. The rubric is a clear and diagnostic instrument for the assignment. Using a rubric will prevent uncertainty in the assessment process; every student is assessed on the same criteria. The rubric allows students to see where they are strong in writing and also where they need improvement. Using a rubric for assessment allows the students to receive clear feedback and plot themselves on the rubric. The rubric is also a record of the students’ work. Rubrics can be kept in a file over time, and progress and growth can be seen when they are used as an assessment tool. The criteria that are put on the rubric are appropriate for the class and are clear. They assess what the teaching is seeking to evaluate.
