Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

INTASC #_____2______

• Brief Description of Evidence:

This artifact contains three examples of activities that can be done in the foreign language classroom with authentic materials. In this case, the authentic media is an audio recording. There are three activities described that the students can do with the media in order to interact with it, and create original language compositions. These activities allow for interaction and collaboration between classmates.

• Analysis of What I Learned:

Authentic materials are an important part of any foreign language classroom. However, the challenge is creating enriching experiences for the students to interact and manipulate authentic materials. Audio is a difficult form of media to work with because it is often too difficult to understand or poor quality. After creating these three activities for audio material, I learned that there are endless possibilities for students to interact with authentic materials. These activities inspire creativity and thoughtfulness on the part of the students. I also learned that they can work together to create original language compositions.

• How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the INTASC Principle:

I understand that students have many levels of development and that each of those levels needs to be taken into consideration. Through creating different styles of activities, I am sensitive to the different rates at which students are developing emotionally, socially, and cognitively. The opportunity to work alone, in groups or in pairs allows the students to choose a working environment in which they will be comfortable. I appreciate the differences among the students and embrace their uniqueness. Though the activities outlined in the artifact, the students will be able to use their own creativity. As the teacher, I strive to encourage confidence and individuality. I access the students' thinking by creating several different types of experiences for them to discuss, listen and respond to each other; the students do this orally and in writing.
