Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

INTASC #_____1______

• Brief Description of Evidence:

This artifact is a unit plan that I created for a second year French class. I taught the majority of this unit to the second year French class at Southside High School. This unit focuses on healthy living and exercise. Throughout the lesson, I incorporated a variety of activities that engaged the students in the material. During the unit, the students had opportunities to manipulate the language and use new vocabulary words to create original compositions. The students created brochures about healthy living using the new grammar structures and vocabulary they learned. I also included supplementary worksheets that the students completed.

• Analysis of What I Learned:

Creating and teaching this unit was a valuable experience for me. I grew as a professional during this unit. I learned that it is important to be flexible and allow for changes and alterations in lesson plans. Throughout the unit, I learned that activities can materialize differently in class than they ideally should. As a professional, I reflected at the end of each lesson about the effective and the less effective activities. Creating this unit plan showed me that it is important to include a variety of interactive activities to accommodate different learning styles and preferences. Planning and executing an entire unit was challenging; however I learned many lessons about teaching during the process.

• How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the INTASC Principle:

As the teacher, I ensured that I was aware of the central concepts to the unit. I thought through the different processes and determined what I thought to be the best way to approach the material in an interesting way. This unit also allows the students to use knowledge from other subject areas and incorporate it into their creative projects. Repetition and review is essential when learning new grammar structures and vocabulary, so I continually revisited the material with different approaches. The activities that demonstrated the new material varied in method in order to accommodate different learning styles. In addition, I was extremely excited about this entire unit. When I taught this lesson, I communicated my passion and enthusiasm to the students by being positive about their work and showing interest in the material.
